NLMA publishes Voter's Guide on Health Care Issues St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, October 1, 2003 Dr. Susan King, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA), announced today the publication of a Voter's Guide on Health Care Issues. The NLMA asked the province's three main political parties a series of questions on health care and published their responses in the Voter's Guide. The Voter's Guide focuses on key areas of concern including the shortage of family physicians; wait lists for surgery and diagnostic tests; access to long-term care, palliative care and home care; pediatric services; an expanded immunization program for infants and children; and, tobacco control. "We believe health care and access to medical services is a very important issue for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians," said Dr. King. "By publishing a Voter's Guide, we hope to keep the focus on health care issues during the election campaign." The Voter's Guide is available to everyone on the NLMA's website. The Voter's Guide will also be distributed as an insert in the Optipress community newspapers across the province, beginning next week. About 100,000 copies will be sent to homes in all parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. "We hope that the Voter's Guide will provide people with answers to some of their health-related questions and we encourage everyone to raise these and other health care issues with the political candidates in their communities throughout the election campaign," said Dr. King.
