As 2009 comes to an end, the worst of the H1N1 pandemic appears to be subsiding. Hopefully this will be the last of the many challenges we have faced in the current year and this holiday season will offer all of us an opportunity to relax and re-energize for 2010.

Our priority for the coming year will be to bring the current negotiations to a successful conclusion. The over-arching goal remains the same. We need to strengthen recruitment and retention of physicians in this province and that means being able to compete with the rest of the country. Competitiveness can only be achieved through meaningful improvements in compensation and working conditions. Wait times at all stages of medical care are already too long and will deteriorate further if this round of negotiations with government is not productive. Getting it right is more important than merely getting it done. We will continue to work tirelessly to achieve our mission, one in which the needs of patients and physicians are entirely symmetrical.

The world we live in has changed radically and irreversibly over the last couple of years. In order for the medical profession to remain strong and to fulfill its inherent role as patient advocates we need to greet the future with insight, clarity of purpose and resolve. Over the next 18 months we will be devoting a great deal of effort to refreshing our mission and strategic plans. This will include a thorough assessment of our current organizational structure and governance. Our future success will be determined by the extent to which our membership participates in the process and we will be reaching out to ensure that every opportunity is made available to you.

My best wishes to all our members for a health and happy 2010.
