Kids Eat Smart (KES) Clubs in Newfoundland and Labrador celebrated Nutrition Month 2009 by participating in the 2nd annual Kids Eat Smart Apple Day on March 19. One hundred and fifteen Kids Eat Smart Clubs served apples in some way that day.

Clubs were creative and offered apples in yogurt parfaits, muffins and on platters with various types of apples cut in wedges with flags indicating the type of apple. As well as promoting nutrition, Apple Day helped boost the funds of KES Clubs that received donations of apples. Kids Eat Smart Foundation matches the value of the donation! Every KES Club that participated received an Apple Day prize pack, which included Kids Eat Smart-branded Frisbees, pedometers, and zipper tags.

In addition to Apple Day, KES Clubs took part in a poster competition themed “Eat Healthy. Play Healthy. Learn Healthy.” Judging was done by Dr. Susan King, Kids Eat Smart Leading Thinker, and David Squires. Thirteen posters were selected to be featured in a Kids Eat Smart 2010 calendar that KES Clubs will use as a fundraiser. The schools/community centres that produced the winning entries received a Nubody’s gym bag filled with gym/fitness equipment donated by Walmart.

Kids Eat Smart Clubs serve children from Kindergarten to grade 12 and over 20,000 participate on a regular basis at over 190 Kids Eat Smart Clubs throughout the province. Clubs are run by over 4,500 volunteers that include parents, grandparents, teachers, students and community members. The Kids Eat Smart Foundation provides financial and organizational support, nutrition information and other supports.
