The Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Abdalla Hanna. He passed peacefully away with his family at his side at the Health Sciences Centre on May 23, 2008.

Dr. Hanna was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and surgeon. He is deeply missed by his loving wife Sylvia and four daughters Sarah, Ruth, Susanne and Louise and his 16 grandchildren. The loss is also felt by his many friends and colleagues.

NLMA President Dr. Joe Tumilty trained under Dr. Hanna as a resident and remembers the veteran doctor as having a work ethic and care for patients that was unmatched.

“He used to be on call for general surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery at three different hospitals at the same time including pediatric surgery at the Janeway Children’s Hospital,” said Dr. Tumilty. “He was constantly at work and constantly available to us as residents.”

Dr. Hanna graduated from medical school in Cairo and completed his surgical residency in New York. He worked briefly in London where he met Sylvia. Together they chose Newfoundland as their home where he began his medical practice at the Burin Cottage Hospital. For the next 40 years he served tirelessly as a surgeon in St. John's and has touched families in all parts of the province. He was a man of great integrity and lived his life fully dedicated to his family and his patients.
