Physician donation supports scholarship

Thanks to a generous donation from Dr. Phyllis Madryga (Duncan) to the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Scholarship Foundation (NLMSF), a scholarship will be awarded in her name. A separate fund has been established under the NLMSF and interest will be awarded yearly.

This scholarship will be given to fourth-year medical students at Memorial University who intend to enter a family practice residency and practice in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Other criteria to be taken into consideration are academic achievement and leadership potential. Dr. Duncan (as she was known to her many friends, colleagues and patients) is now retired and living in Manitoba. She spent her medical career as a family physician in Trinity.

Bursaries

The Canadian Medical Association, through its subsidiary MD Management Ltd., and the Canadian Medical Foundation has partnered with the NLMA to offer financial assistance to medical students. This joint initiative enables a limited number of bursaries to be made available to medical students in Newfoundland and Labrador-funded seats at Memorial University. Since 2002, 12 bursaries have been awarded.

The NLMA extends its sincere thanks to members who contributed to the Scholarship Foundation upon membership renewal in 2005.
