Katherine Daley, former director of the
Centre for Nursing Studies, in her retirement, has responded to a
need to establish an organization dedicated to discovering,
collecting and preserving the history of health care in the province
by establishing the Newfoundland and Labrador Health and Community
Services Archive and Museum.
The organization was incorporated in
February 2004 and received charitable status under the charities
directorate in November 2004. It is currently home to a library of
health care books, a collection of archival material, and an oral
history interview collection of individual stories pertaining to
such topics as tuberculosis and the cottage hospital system.
In December 2005, the organization
published a book that traces the evolution of health care in the
province. A History of Health Care in Newfoundland and Labrador
is available in bookstores or may be ordered by contacting the
organization. The archive and museum also produces a quarterly
newsletter, the Script. Contact the museum and archive office
to subscribe.
In late April, the museum and archive
organized a fund-raising dinner and auction at the Knights of
Columbus Hall. The event raised $12,000 for the organization thanks
to the support of community members and health care professionals
who attended the event or volunteered their time.
The archive and museum office is open
daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Board of Trade building on
Kenmount Road. If you are interested in learning more about the
organization, you can call 709-757-3296 or
visit the
website for information on volunteer opportunities and upcoming
events.
