The role of the preceptor (teaching
physician) within our medical community is of vital importance to
the future of the medical profession. Preceptors help new physicians
develop into mature medical professionals by passing on their
knowledge, guiding and mentoring. In recognition of this important
role, the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University has developed
an online learning portal designed specifically for busy preceptors.
The portal provides continuing professional development for
practice-based preceptors and creates an arena for the exchange of
ideas and experiences.
As a regular contributor of content to the
portal, Dr. Cheri Bethune has been involved in developing the preceptor
portal. Ive been a teacher of medical students and residents in my
practice for a number of years now, says Dr. Bethune, and really enjoy
helping young doctors in the process of becoming independent
professionals. Teaching students takes time, and so to enable preceptors
to enhance their teaching skills we have developed an online tool that
supports preceptors by providing online course that will help them
polish their skills.
The
portal
provides accredited content, which enables existing preceptors to
broaden their teaching techniques. There is opportunity, too, for online
discussion with other preceptors across the province. The portal also
provides information to physicians interested in becoming preceptors.
In the next few months there will be a
number of new courses added to the portal, which will increase the menu
of courses offered, says Dr. Bethune. We invite all physicians
interested in teaching to visit the portal, create a free account and
try out some of our courses.
Comments on how the portal may be improved
to better to meet physician needs are welcome.
