The Canadian Red Cross is holding its
3rd Atlantic Conference on Disaster Management in St. John’s on
April 29-30th. The theme of this year’s conference is “No Need to
Bug Out: Effective Planning for Pandemics and Other Emergencies.”
The conference provides an opportunity for
like-minded disaster management professionals to network with other
emergency managers and planners in a meaningful and practical way. This
year’s selection of presenters will provide helpful insight for planning
and preparedness efforts when attendees return to their communities and
workplaces.
The keynote speakers include Dr. David
Butler-Jones, Canada’s first and current Chief Public Health Officer at
the Public Health Agency of Canada. Dr. Butler-Jones has practiced
throughout Canada and consulted internationally in public health and
clinical medicine. He is also a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at
the University of Manitoba and a clinical professor with the Department
of Community Health and Epidemiology at the University of Saskatchewan.
In his keynote address, Dr. Butler-Jones will provide an overview of
emergency health management in Canada while offering insights into some
of the recent health emergencies impacting Canadian communities.
Terry Standing will also provide a keynote
address about his experiences as response commander to the flood crisis
in England’s southwest county of Gloucestershire. Standing is fire chief
officer for the Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service. He is also and
the county’s group director of community safety, responsible for the
Community Safety Directorate, consisting of the fire and rescue service,
emergency management service, trading standards, coroners, registrars
and community safety.
Two pre-conference workshops will also be
held on April 28th including “Crisis Media Relations 101,” where
participants will learn how to deliver messaging in times of crisis
without creating a panic and media relations techniques when
communicating on emergencies or disasters. The “12 Steps to Municipal
Emergency Planning” pre-conference workshop is aimed at helping
communities and responding officials prepare for major disasters or
emergencies.
Participants can register for the
conference online,
by email or by calling the Red
Cross at (506) 674-6188.
