Eastern Health has begun a central
intake pilot project to better facilitate referrals to its child and
adolescent mental health and addictions services.
Central intake was developed following a
review of evidence gathered from across Canada supporting the need for a
consumer-friendly central intake service. This new service prioritizes
referrals through a comprehensive phone screening that ensures families
are placed with the most appropriate service. The program will also
reduce duplication of services to patients and monitor wait times in
programs.
The pilot consists of a new phone number
for families and youth to call directly for information and
self-referral to various Mental Health and Addictions Services of
Eastern Health, as well as a dedicated fax number for referral forms
from health care professionals. The new phone number is (709) 777-2200.
Health care professionals can fax the
Mental Health and Addictions Referral Form to the Central Intake Fax:
(709) 777-2211. Please fully complete this form. An intake coordinator
will complete a telephone assessment with t he family or youth and
determine the most appropriate service that best fits the patient’s
needs.
The services involved in central intake
and their target populations are:
-
Janeway Family Centre (Eastern Health
with several provincial services)
-
Janeway Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry (Provincial service)
-
Family Services Counselors (St. John’s
Region)
-
Youth Services Mental Health
Counselors (St. John’s Region)
-
BRIDGES (Eastern Health Region)
-
Addictions-adolescent outpatient
services (St. John’s Region) & Rowan Treatment Centre (Provincial
service)
Central Intake will assist these six
services in better networking and delivering timely and appropriate
interventions. All other Eastern Health child and adolescent services
will continue with their current intake process. The effectiveness of
this new single point of entry referral system will be evaluated after
one year of operation. Any questions may be directed to the Central
Intake Clinical Coordinator, June Kirkland-Smith, at (709) 777-2200.
