The EMR pilot project is a joint initiative of the Department of Health and Community Services, the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information (NLCHI) and Eastern Health, in conjunction with the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association.

The Newfoundland Drive Family Practice clinic and the Memorial University Family Practice unit, which operates out of four clinic locations, are the two family practice groups participating in the project.

The next phase in the shift to EMR solutions for integrated practice management is connecting with Meditech to receive outgoing laboratory and radiology reports, and the MCP billing system.

“What we’re seeing now is a combination of new technologies…all coming together with more robust operating systems to the point where we are able to put together a very effective solution for physician offices,” says Tom Alteen, Health Information Network Project Manager for NLCHI. “I predict that in years to come, Newfoundland and Labrador will experience similar uptake of EMR technologies that exist in such mature EMR provinces as Alberta.”
