CME series now available on CD-ROM

A series of CME sessions on the topic of chronic nonmalignant pain, opioids and addiction is now available on CD-ROM.

A series of CME sessions on the topic of chronic nonmalignant pain, opioids and addiction — delivered in Burin, Clarenville, Corner Brook, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, St. Anthony and St. John’s — is now available on CD-ROM.

Developed by the Faculty of Medicine’s Office of Professional Development at Memorial University, in partnership with provincial Department of Health and Community Services and the Oxycontin Task Force, the CME series was provided to more than 200 physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other allied health professionals.

Presenters included:

  • Dr. David Ruggles, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Memorial, on Chronic Non-malignant Pain and the Chronic Pain Syndrome: Assessment and Management

  • Jackie Butt, addictions coordinator with Health and Community Services St. John’s Region, on Assessment and Exploration of the Addictions Process

  • Beverley Clarke, CEO of Health and Community Services St. John’s and chair of the OxyContin Task Force, on Scope of the Opioid Challenge in Newfoundland and Labrador

  • Dr. Robert Miller with the Discipline of Family Medicine at Memorial presented on Scope of the Opioid Challenge in Newfoundland and Labrador at an evening CME session on May 26, 2004

The CD-ROM, containing the presentations by Dr. Ruggles, Dr. Miller and Ms. Butt, includes the learning objectives, a resources section with links to various websites dealing with pain management and research, and substance abuse. The CD, in partnership with the NLMA and the Newfoundland Pharmaceutical Association, will be distributed to physicians, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals this spring. The CD was developed with funding through an unrestricted educational grant received from Purdue Pharma and Janssen-Ortho Inc.

An online chronic pain management course is in the development phase with Dr. Ruggles as the content expert, and will be delivered through www.MDcme.ca.
