Canadian Association of
Pathologists recognizes Dr. Donald Cook
Dr. Donald Cook has been awarded the
President’s Award from the Canadian Association of Pathologists (CAP)
for 2008. The award was presented to Dr. Cook in July during CAP’s
national meeting in Ottawa for his commitment and high level of service
to Canadian pathology.
“Dr. Cook was an obvious choice for this
award. He has been a pillar of strength, a source of constant support,
as well as encouragement and one who did not hesitate to suggest that we
change our approach when necessary,” said Dr. Jagdish Butany, president
of CAP.
“What we may have achieved in these last
few months has been with his blessings and with his help. He has given
us his time and expertise for many years and we are all better off for
his contribution. Newfoundland and Labrador is fortunate to have him.”
Dr. Oscar Howell, vice-president of
medical services with Eastern Health, echoed Dr. Butany’s sentiments and
said the health authority is extremely pleased CAP has acknowledged his
outstanding service.
“Dr. Cook has been a leader within Eastern
Health for many years and has provided our patients with outstanding
care,” said Dr. Howell.
“I am very honored that the Canadian
Association of Pathologists has given me this award,” said Dr. Cook. “It
is a challenging time for pathologists across the country but we believe
in what we are doing and I couldn’t be more proud to be associated with
this group.”
Dr. William Fitzgerald receives Order
of Canada
In April, Dr. William Fitzgerald was
invested with the Order of Canada. For more than 30 years, Dr.
Fitzgerald has been providing outstanding medical care to the residents
of St. Anthony. As a surgeon at the local hospital, he has made himself
available to patients at all hours and has mentored young physicians. He
is also highly regarded for his work in southern Labrador, where he
established a screening, detection and management program for colorectal
cancer, which has saved many lives in generations of families. In
addition, he has been an active volunteer in his community where he is
deeply respected for his commitment to his region and its residents.
Physicians participate in Tely 10
Since 1922, the Tely 10 has been one
of the province’s most popular road races, drawing close to 1000
participants each year. The 10-mile run begins at Octagon Pond in the
Town of Paradise and finishes at Bannerman Park in the heart of St.
John’s. In July, a large group of physicians, some coming from as far as
Corner Brook, arrived in St. John’s to participate in the race either in
teams or as individual participants. Dr. Michelle Young, one of the race
participants and team organizers, said the race was a great opportunity
for physicians to practice what they preach by promoting active
lifestyles and social responsibility. All profits from the Tely 10 were
donated to the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association programs.
