The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and the CMA’s Centre for Physician Health and Well-being have launched an innovative new podcast series called Healthy Practices.

The series will explore the challenges and ways of overcoming the stressors affecting the personal and professional lives of physicians.

“We want to help doctors be healthy and enjoy their career in medicine,” said then CMA President Dr. Brian Day during General Council in August.

“The Healthy Practices podcast is one of the many forward-thinking tools and services that the CMA offers physicians to help them thrive in the ever-changing world of medicine,” he added.

A podcast is a series of digital media files, which are easily downloaded from the Internet using syndicated feeds that users can subscribe to, also known as podcasting. The content can then be transferred to a mobile media player like mp3 players or iPods after it has been downloaded.

Healthy Practices is hosted by internationally renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Mamta Gautam, also known as the “Doctor’s Doctor” since all her patients are physicians.

“Physicians often do not consider their own health a priority,” said Dr. Gautam, “but it is the foundation for providing good health care to their patients. I am very pleased to be part of this progressive online program that provides practical and essential information to help physicians better manage their own health and wellness.”

Healthy Practices also features a range of health expert guests, including physicians and people sharing meaningful stories about the importance of living a well-balanced and healthy life.

The two, five-episode series will be broadcast on the CMA website until December 2008. The first series focuses on “Mental Health” and covers topics from stress and burnout to depression and stigma. The second series concentrates on findings from the first-ever Canadian Physician Health Study.
