Memorial University’s undergraduate medical curriculum has received continuing full accreditation until the next site visit in 2012-13.

The MD Undergraduate Medical Education Program accreditation site visit took place May 15-18, 2005. The Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)) at their meeting on February 22, 2006, awarded continuing accreditation of the education program leading to the MD degree, with a follow-up limited survey which occurred April 2007.

After reviewing the report of the survey team, the LCME and CACMS voted to continue accreditation of the education program leading to the MD degree at Memorial University for the balance of the prior term.

Dr. James Rourke, dean of medicine, commented that he is very proud of the work that students, staff and faculty have done to achieve this significant goal. “This reflects well on the high quality of medical education provided at Memorial University.”

In addition to continuing full accreditation for the undergraduate curriculum, all specialty postgraduate residency programs in the Faculty of Medicine are fully approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the family medicine and family medicine/emergency medicine residency programs are fully approved by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. The next schedule for postgraduate accreditation is 2010.

Dr. Rourke noted another sign of the high quality of Memorial’s medical graduates are the results of the 2006 Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam Part II, written in October after the first year of postgraduate training. For the second time in six years, Memorial graduates ranked first of the Canadian medical schools in this exam.

Dr. Rourke said the Faculty of Medicine is committed to continue its hard work on the undergraduate MD education program curriculum and the postgraduate residency training programs and will remain ahead of educational standards set by the licensing bodies as they continue to evolve.
