By CMA Staff

This past June the NLMA, in partnership with the Canadian Medical Association, launched the Canada’s Doctors: your partners in healthy living pilot program in the province. This program projects a positive image of physicians and highlights the physician’s role as the trusted source of information for patients on all health matters.

Free resource materials for both physicians and patients are available through the program. Posters and patient handouts on toddler safety and senior fall prevention as well as a handy hot water temperature indicator card can be ordered in quantity by NLMA members.

The material is designed to be easily incorporated into a medical practice. Here is what some Newfoundland and Labrador physicians have said about the program:

  • “I have displayed the posters in my waiting room and this has helped stimulate conversation on these important topics, particularly with my elder patients. Parents especially like the temperature indicator cards.” — Dr. Susan King, family physician

  • “I give the patient handout and temperature indicator card every time I see a family with a toddler. All the families have been appreciative, thank me for the information and are very interested in checking their hot water temperature.” — Dr. Sandra Luscombe, developmental pediatrician

The program has had great initial success and physicians are encouraged to join their colleagues in this important pilot project. Visit cma.ca/doctorsforhealthyliving for complete information on the program, the resources available and online ordering.

Physician participation in the program and its evaluation will help the CMA and the NLMA build a member benefit program that can continue to serve physicians and patients, while presenting the positive, caring side of medicine to the public.
