Program assists low-income pregnant women and families

The MBNS is a monthly benefit provided to eligible low income pregnant women and families with children under the age of one, to assist with the extra cost of eating healthy during pregnancy and throughout the child's first year.

Health professionals advise that eating a healthy diet during pregnancy and access to health information is extremely important for pregnant women. This healthy diet and continued access to community resources and information is also important throughout the child's first year.
For this reason, the Department of Human Resources and Employment introduced the Mother Baby Nutrition Supplement (MBNS) in 2001.
The MBNS is a monthly benefit provided to eligible low income pregnant women and families with children under the age of one, to assist with the extra cost of eating healthy during pregnancy and throughout the child's first year. Pregnant women and families are eligible if their family net income is under $22,397 annually. The program also provides referrals to community resources and distributes information brochures.
"Hundreds of low income pregnant women have taken advantage of the Mother Baby Nutrition Supplement, and we encourage more to apply," said Human Resources and Employment Minister Ralph Wiseman. "Our goal is to provide this supplement to as many eligible pregnant women and families in need of financial assistance as possible as part of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's commitment to the well-being of children and families."
Minister Wiseman went on to say: "While the increase in the number of women and families now receiving the MBNS is encouraging, there are still a significant number of eligible pregnant women and families who have not applied for the pre-natal portion of the supplement. I strongly encourage all eligible pregnant women and families to apply for this benefit."
Pregnant women and families, whether or not they are receiving income support benefits, can apply for the Mother Baby Nutrition Supplement through the Department of Human Resources and Employment by calling toll-free 1-800-508-4788.
