News Release NLMA says more time needed to complete radiology review Media | Media Advisories | News Releases | Statements | Backgrounders | Graphics | Letters to Editor | May 29, 2007 Dr. Joseph Tumilty, president-elect of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association, today expressed concerns about a two-week turn around for a review of 6,000 radiology reports. “The physicians of the province understand the intent of the Minister of Health and Community Services, and his desire to complete this review as quickly as possible to allay the concerns and anxieties of the patients and families impacted by this situation,” said Dr. Tumilty. “That is why the radiologists of the province have risen to the task and are all working very hard to achieve the government’s two-week timeframe. “However, three days into the review, it is clear that our radiologists cannot complete this review in the prescribed time frame with quality control in mind.” Dr. Tumilty said the NLMA has been advised by the radiologists of the province that a two-week turnaround is not possible and that more time is needed. “Our radiologists are saying that they must balance timeliness with quality control,” said Dr. Tumilty. “Our members will continue to work as quickly as possible to complete this review within the parameters of safety. This is the right thing to do for our patients and is responsive to the ultimate objectives of the government and the physicians involved in the review.” |
