Backgrounder Dr. Joseph Tumilty Media | Media Advisories | News Releases | Statements | Backgrounders | Graphics | Letters to Editor | MD, FRCSC Orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Joseph Tumilty, says he always intended to practice medicine in a community setting. After graduating from the Dalhousie University School of Medicine in 1991 and completing his internship the follow year, Dr. Tumilty entered the residency program at Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine. He completed his training in 1996 and soon after established his practice as an orthopaedic surgeon at the James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander, NL. He continues to practice in Gander, where he and his wife are raising their two children. Dr. Tumilty is also a clinical assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery with Memorial University, Department of Surgery. His professional appointments include tenures as Chief of Staff at the James Paton Memorial Hospital (1999-2000) and Chief of Medical Staff with the former Central East Health Care Institutions Board from May 2000 to May 2006. Dr. Tumilty is a past president of the Atlantic Provinces Orthopaedic Society and has been a member of the NLMA Board of Directors since 2004. Dr. Tumilty was awarded Resident Teacher of the Year by Memorial University’s Class of Medicine, 1996 and was presented with the John G. Williams Clinical Teaching Award, 1999 by the Professional Association of Interns & Residents, Newfoundland. |
